Special Touches
What sets our office apart is not only the skill of our team and our technology, but also our focus on the well-being of our patients.
Dental care in our Manalapan, NJ office incorporates the comforts we know our patients deserve and want. Some of these include:
- A Refreshment Bar
- TVs in Hygiene Rooms
- Complimentary Blood Pressure Screenings
- Neck Pillows
- Wheelchair Service
Digital Radiography
We use digital radiography technology, which has significant advantages over film-based radiography,
including far less radiation and greater efficiency. There is no need for processing in a darkroom. Images quickly
appear on the computer monitors in our treatment rooms, and they can be instantly shared for consultation by any or
all of our specialized dentists.
These images can also be e-mailed to other dentists or providers. We have many patients from throughout the
U.S. and many who travel from around the globe to receive treatment in our practice. We are able to share digital
images with referring dentists anywhere in the world. The images can be transmitted to patients’ insurance companies
quickly and efficiently.
We are also able to display them on the computer monitors in our treatments rooms for enhanced patient education.
Cone Beam Computed Tomography
Truly one of the most important imaging and diagnostic breakthroughs in modern dentistry,
cone beam CT provides 3D images of the jaw structures and teeth, with extraordinary accuracy and detail.
It has become the gold standard for patient care in
implant dentistry. The 3D images enable us to plan our
surgery so we are able to avoid causing damage to nerves and to vital structures, including blood vessels and the sinuses.
Virtual surgery can be performed and evaluated before actual surgery takes place. The office of
Specialized Dentistry of New Jersey (SDNJ) is one of the few dental practices to provide cone beam CT in our office. Most practices
have to send their patients to an outside imaging center. This equipment defines “state-of-the-art”. Our
cone beam CT, operated by our expertly trained staff, offers maximum convenience, safety and precision.
Digital Impression Scanner
Digital Dental Impressions
If you have ever had the experience of sitting in the dentist chair with your mouth chock full of a
foul-tasting substance, trying not to gag for a full 15 minutes, then you know what getting an
impression taken of your teeth for needed dental work used to be. The good news is that a new
technology now exists which can replace that unpleasant experience of taking teeth impressions
known as digital optical dental impressions.
Benefits of Digital Impressions
- Improved impression quality for better-fitting restorations
- Less chair time
- No need for distasteful impression materials
- More comfortable, less anxious experience for patients and the dental team
- Reduced possibility of impression-taking errors and elimination of material inaccuracies
for fewer restoration mistakes
The process is eco-friendly and includes eliminating the need for disposable plastic trays and
impression materials, which otherwise would be polluting landfill space; digital data can be
eliminated with the “delete” button.
Although the new digital technique does not totally replace
the use of traditional impressions, it has made the majority of the procedures more comfortable
with the added benefit of predictable accuracy.
Single Visit Crown Technology
Do you recall a crown or crowns you've had made at your dentist's office where a tooth was
numbed and shaped, an impression was taken, a temporary crown was cemented and then you
left the office? You had to return to the office in two or three weeks to have the crown fitted and
cemented to the tooth. Did you have any problems or sensitivity with the temporary crown?
Unlike this traditional method, same day crowns uses a combination of infrared imaging,
computer CAD/CAM design and a precise milling machine to help complete the entire process is
about 2 hours from start to finish - all in one appointment!
Why would you want a same day crown instead of a conventional one?
- Less time in the dental chair - half the number of appointments; fewer local anesthetic episodes.
- Less tooth structure is lost in most cases. We can make most of the preparations for these crowns without cutting away as much of your natural tooth.
- Many lab crowns have a metal substrate that porcelain is bonded to. Same day crowns are all porcelain - this means lower chances of allergic or immune response to the material in the crown.
- Cost is the same in our office for either type of crown.
- Less chance for complications - most temporary restorations leak or have other
discrepancies that can sometimes lead to increased sensitivity and this can even create the
need for further treatment such as root canal therapy. When the crown is started and
finished in one appointment, the tooth structure is better sealed off and protected at an
earlier stage with the result that risk of complications and/or sensitivity can be lowered.
- While all patients are not candidates for same day crowns, for those who are, this technology is a real time saver!
Laser Cavity Detection
Previously we had to rely on the use of a dental explorer (pick) to detect,
small, soft or sensitive spots on the teeth.
Today, our laser cavity detection system enables us to much more accurately detect hard-to-find cavities
and decay hidden beneath tooth surfaces in their very early stages, when are they so small that they don’t
show up on x-rays. With early detection, we are able to treat them before they become large, painful cavities
and cause even more damage to your teeth.
This “early warning” cavity diagnosis and prompt treatment means smaller fillings and, in some cases, may avoid
the need for more serious procedures, including root canals.
Electric High-Speed Hand Pieces
The traditional dental handpiece is air driven. The compressed air drives a turbine in the head of the
handpiece, producing a high-pitched, often anxiety-provoking noise and vibration. Our electric handpieces
are powered by an extremely quiet electric motor, with much greater strength (torque) and precision than
air-driven equipment.
This vastly improved handpiece design can reduce the time you spend in the chair and may significantly improve the
quality and fit of your final restorations.
Picasso Soft Tissue Laser
We use gentle Picasso Soft Tissue Laser for many oral surgical procedures. It is much kinder to the
soft tissues (gums, blood vessels, nerves and the membranes which line delicate areas, such as the sinuses).
There is no blade. Instead laser light precision is produced by this special surgical instrument to achieve
unparalleled precision, patient comfort, and reduced healing time.
Intra-Oral Camera
An intra-oral camera is a very small camera. In some cases, an intra-oral camera is just a few millimeters long.
We use it to enhance your understanding of your diagnosis. An intra-oral camera allows us to view clear, precise images
of your mouth, teeth, and gums, in order for us to accurately make a diagnosis. With clear, defined, enlarged images,
you see details that may be missed by standard mirror examinations. This can mean faster diagnosis with less chair-time
for you!
Central Sterilization Area
We maintain a fully equipped central sterilization area, which exceeds industry and government standards,
where all dental instruments are first cleaned in ultrasonic baths, then are sterilized under pressure in our
autoclave machines, We have staff members dedicated exclusively to maintaining the highest level of instrument
and equipment cleanliness.
Oral Cancer Screening
31,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year and, because it has an exceptionally
high mortality rate, more than half of them will die over the next five years. If detected early, 90 percent of
oral cancer cases are curable.
During every hygiene visit, our dental hygienists conduct screenings for visual signs of oral cancer, as
well as for abnormalities that may not be visible to the patient.
If an area is sufficiently suspicious, a simple surgical biopsy is conducted and the
tissue is sent to Mount Siani Medical Center for immediate analysis.

In-Office Laboratory
Our in-house dental lab allows
Dr. Courey to put the perfect artistry into every dental prosthetic that he places.
Whether you require a
crown,
veneers or a full set of
dentures, you can be certain that his careful attention to
detail will make your restoration something that fits and functions, beautifully.
In an emergency, our onsite lab is right there to perform repairs of broken restorations, such as dentures, bridges
and crowns. In most cases, repairs can be done quickly and at minimal cost. Repairs at outside labs require additional
visits, often at significant cost to the patient.
